School of Public Health, Shandong University, former Department of Public Health of Shandong Medical University, was founded in 1952 and has gone through three phases of reorganization. It has been developing fast after the third reorganization in 1977, and was upgraded to School of Public Health from the Department of Public Healthof Shandong Medical Universityin 1996.When Shandong University, Shandong Medical University and Shandong Industrial University merged to form one unified institution known asthe currentShandong University in 2000, the school then changed its name to School of Public Health, Shandong University. After going through all the changes in the past sixty years, with generations of relentless efforts, the school has made rapid progress from all aspects and become an indispensible national training base for talents inthe field of preventive medicine and public health.

The school haseighty-six faculty members, including twenty-two professors, nineteen associate professors, and twenty-two lecturers.Besides, theschool has twomembers of EducationCommittee of Ministry of Education,seven guest professors of Shandong University, twenty-one doctoral supervisors, and 43 master’s supervisors. Amongthe entire faculty, about 50% have overseas educational background, and 75% have doctor’s degree.Dozens of faculties are concurrently members, experts, consultants,chairmen or presidents of relevant national organizations andcommittees such as National Health Commission, Health Department of Shandong Province, various academic associations and journals. The entire faculty together forms areasonably organized teaching team and a high level research team.

The school consists ofseven departments: Department of Epidemiology, Department of Biostatistics, Department of Hygiene Toxicology and Nutrition, Department of Occupationaland Environmental Health, Department of Social Medicine,Child Health and Maternal Care, Department of Physical and Chemical Inspection, and Department of Microbiological Inspection. The school has one affiliated Public Health and Preventive Medicine Experimental Center, under which there are Laboratory for Undergraduate Students, Laboratory for Physical and Chemical Inspection and Biological Effect, Laboratory for Medical Information Data Processing, Laboratory for Epidemics and Microorganism Inspection, and SPF Animal Laboratory. Besides, there are seven affiliated research centers, namely SDU STD/HIV Prevention and Control Center, SDU TB Control Center, SDU Climate Change and Health Center, SDU Suicide Prevention Research Center, SDU Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-based Medicine, SDU Institute of Health Big Data, and SDU Institute of EcoHealth. The School's disciplinary of Epidemiology and Health Statistics is recognized as a national key disciplinary. The Ministry of Health's Key Lab for Health Economics and Policy Research is hosted by the school.

School of Public Health is an authorized center for doctoral degree of first class discipline, a post-doctoral station of first class discipline, as well as an authorized center for master degree of Master of Public Health (MPH). The undergraduate program of preventive medicine is a five-year program offering three distinct majors: Preventive Medicine, Hygiene Testing, and Health Administration. The school also offers college education, continuing education and online education on Preventive Medicine,Medical Laboratory Science, Food Quality and Safety.

The School offers comprehensive training programs for both undergraduate and graduate students. The undergraduate program is a five-year program offering three distinct majors: preventive medicine, hygiene testing, and health administration. Around 120 undergraduates matriculate each year, for a total of six hundred undergraduates in the school. The School offers Master of Medicine, Doctor of Medicine, and Master of Public Health (MPH) training programs. Currently, 210 master's students, 60 PhD students, and over 300 MPH students study at the School. The School also offers a post-doctoral program focusing on preventive medicine.

The School of Public Health researches a wide range of topics including infectious and non-communicable diseases control studies, environmental health, occupational health, nutrition, child and maternal health, and health policy and management.The school is making constant breakthroughs in scientific research fields, and hashas received a number of research grants from both international and domestic funding bodies, including the World Health Organization, World Bank, UNICEF, EU,National Key Technology R&D Program, National Science and Technology Major Project, the National Natural Science Fund, “Project 863”, “Project 973”, National Health and Family Planning Commission, and provincial departments. During the last three years, approximately 170 research projectswereconducted with the grants of over 25 million RMB. About 1000 research papers in both domestic and foreign journals, including around 300 SCI, SSCI, EI, CSSCI papers,andaround 100 monographs and textbooks have been published. Approved by Shandong Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education in 2008, Shandong Center for Disease Control and Preventionbecame Institute of Preventive Medicine, Shandong University, and hasprovided an all-round cooperation platform for talents training and scientific research in the field of public health for both School of Public Health and Shandong CDC.

The following points are proofs of the school’s distinguishing feature and competence.

a. Our new Public Health Discipline Development Platform by combining field laboratories and indoor laboratories.

b. Shandong Provincial Food Safety Monitoring and Management and Risk Assessment Center authorized by Science and Technology Bureau of Shandong Province.

c. The Epidemics and Microorganism Inspection Lab leaded by distinguished talent of the state.

d. The Suicide Prevention Research Center of Shandong University which plays a leading role domestically and internationally in terms of epidemics of suicide and suicide prevention and control tactics study.

e. The Climate Change and Health Research Center, which plays a leading role worldwide in terms of climate change and health research.

f. the Biostatistics Research Team which enjoys its repute worldwide, famous for its study in omics data statistical analysis and systematic epidemiology theoretical research and application, health/disease risks assessment and life course epidemiology theoretical research and application, translational medicine and real world clinical research design and statistical analysis methods, spatial epidemiology and genetics theoretical method study and application.

g. Chronic non-infectious disease epidemiology research.

h. The study of occupational intoxication/environment pollution is recognized by domestic insiders, and the study of toxic neuropathy mechanism is among international advanced level.

The school has been constantly strengthening international cooperation, and has establishedstable partnership with dozens of public health education and research institutions in theover ten countries and regions such asU.S., Britain, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Germany and so on. Currently, subjects in the field of Biostatistics, Hygiene Toxicology, Health Service Administration and Epidemiology could be taught in English, and are open to international students.

Guided by the development plan of the university and thereality of the school, the school intends to make constant efforts to improvescientific researchinput-output ratio bystrengthening talent pool construction, and increase its socialinfluence and competitiveness through social service programs, striving to become a world class public health school.
