Department of Social Medicine and Maternal & Child Health


I. PROFILE

Department of Social Medicine and Maternal & Child Health (DSMMCH) was established in November 2017. It was formed by the merger of the previous Department Of Social Medicine And Health Service Management, and the previous Department Of Maternal And Child Health. It now covers two secondary disciplines, namely social medicine and health service management, and maternal & child health. In 2000, the discipline of social medicine and health service management was approved to become the only Key Laboratory of Health Economics and Policy Research of the former Ministry of Health of China.

Owing a great influence on the professional teaching and scientific research institutions in the fields of health services management and policy, health economics, women's and children's health both at home and abroad, based on the ‘National Health Commission Key Laboratory of Health Economics and Policy Research’ and ‘2011 Collaborative Innovation Platform’, DSMMCH has made positive contributions to economic and social development and healthy China. Many high level and multidisciplinary academic researches had been carried out and health reform and development policy consultation reports had been provided by DSMMCH.

 

II. FACULTY

DSMMCH has 11 full-time teaching and research staff, including 4 full-time professors, 3 associate professors, 3 lecturers and 1 senior experimenter. 4 doctoral supervisors and 7 master supervisors are in DSMMCH. Over 80% of full-time teachers have overseas study and visiting experience.

In addition to full-time staff, DSMMCH also has more than 10 leading international experts on the issues of health management and policy research as visiting professors and academic consultants. For example, Professor Ma Xin of Texas Medical Center, associate professor Sean Sylvia from the University of North Carolina At Chapel Hill, and associate professor Chen Zhuo of the University of Georgia.

 

III. TRAINING OF STUDENTS

In the past ten years, DSMMCH has trained and recruited more than 100 Chinese master's degree students, 30 Chinese doctoral degree students, 10 Chinese postdoctoral students, and 10 foreign students on doctoral and master degree. Many postgraduates have won the National Scholarship of China, President's Scholarship of Shandong University, and Excellent Master's Thesis of Shandong Province. There are a wide range of postgraduate employment units, including various health administrative departments, food and drug supervision and administration departments, entry-exit inspection and quarantine departments, human resources and social security departments, general hospitals, research institutes and universities.

 

IV. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

In the past five years, DSMMCH has undertaken nearly 100 research projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Natural Science Foundation of China. Meanwhile, DSMMCH also has undertaken more than 10 projects supported by the World Health Organization, World Bank, CMB and other international organizations. The total scientific research fund of DSMMCH is over 13 million RMB.

All the staffs in DSMMCH has totally published more than 1,000 academic articles, including more than 100 academic articles in BMJ, PLoS Medicine, Health Affairs and other top international journals. Moreover, DSMMCH had published more than 30 monographs and textbooks, won more than 21 awards on different level, wrote more than 100 policy research reports and submitted 19 political proposals.

 

V. EXCHANGES PROGRAM AND COOPERATION

DSMMCH had established long-term cooperative relations with the National Health Commission, China Food And Drug Administration, Chinese Center For Disease Control And Prevention, Shandong Provincial Health Commission and other health related departments.

DSMMCH had also developed good scientific research collaborations with related disciplines at Fudan University, Tsinghua University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Harbin Medical University, Anhui Medical University and other domestic institutions. DSMMCH had jointly carried out many major scientific research projects and established health policy research bases in many cities of Shandong Province.

 

DSMMCH had successively created the good cooperative relationship with the relevant departments the international well-known university, such as Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, University College London, University of Oslo, The University of Adelaide, The University Of Tokyo. Regular academic exchanges and research cooperation and joint training graduate students are conducted between these famous universities and Shandong University.

 

VI. SOCIAL SERVICES

In addition to policy consultation and scientific research services, DSMMCH also actively provides training services to improve the management and professional ability of health personnel in various regions in China. We has successively conducted training courses for improving the professional quality of staffs in the health system of Tibet Autonomous Region, Shandong Province, especially for those who are from the primary health service system.
