The Department of Microbiological Laboratory Technology originated from the Virology Research Laboratory that was approved to be established by the Ministry of Health in 1979. The health laboratory technology was developed as a section of preventive medicine for undergraduate students in 1992, and the department merged with the Department of Hygiene Chemistry to become the Institute of Health Laboratory Technology in 2001. In 2002, we and the Institute of Epidemiology and Health Statistics applied for the national key discipline successfully. In 2007, Professor Wang Zhiyu organized several departments to apply for Key Laboratory of Health Laboratory Technology of Shandong Province successfully, and Microbiological Laboratory Technology was one of the main research fields. In 2011, epidemiology and microbiology laboratory was established. In 2012, the Institute of Health Laboratory Technology was renamed as Department of Health Laboratory Technology. The department was renamed as Department of Health Microbiology and Department of Microbiological Laboratory Technology in 2014 and 2017, respectively.

Faculty

   Currently there are 7 faculty members in the department, including two professors, four associate professors and one assistant professor, five of whom obtained doctoral degrees and four had overseas study experiences. There is one supervisor for doctoral degree, and five for master degree. Professor Wang Zhiyu is the PI, who is an expert known as the” Special government allowances of the State Council”. The total faculty is becoming a teaching and research team with good sense of innovation, development prospects and international level.

In 1978, we were authorized to supervise candidates of master's degree for microbiology and immunology and began to do so for master's and doctor’s degree candidates respectively for  Epidemiology and Health Statistics (virology) in 1998, and master's and doctor’s degree for Health Laboratory Technology in 2005. Up to now, more than 100 students obtained master’s degree and more than 10 obtained doctor’s degree. Currently, there are 26 master and 9 PhD candidates in the department.

Research fields

(1) The pathogenesis and prevention and control technology for human viral diseases: the structures and functions of viral genes and proteins important human viruses were focused on and researches on molecular epidemiology of viral infections, pathogenesis mechanism, new vaccine, virus infection and immunity, screening for anti-viral drug targets are also being carried out

(2) Natural foci disease research: investigation of natural foci transmitted by ticks, mites, mosquito and rat , focusing on molecular epidemiological characteristics of major and multiple natural foci of disease, pathogenesis and prevention and control technology.

(3) Food safety, drug-resistant bacteria screening, disinfection products testing.

Lab construction

The laboratory has been engaged in the study of molecular virology since its establishment in 1979. It belongs to the Key Laboratory of Experimental Teratology of Education Ministry, and also a part of the National Key Disciplines of Epidemiology and Health Statistics. It was authorized as Key Laboratory of Health Laboratory Technology of Shandong Province in 2007, and expanded to be established as the epidemiological and microbiological laboratory based on the "Thousand Talents Program" in 2012. Now, we have a complete set of laboratory instruments and equipment related to microbiological tests and study, and the experimental environment has reached the biosafety level II. In 2016, the lab was authorized as the Key Laboratory of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control of Shandong Universities.

Teaching and research work

We have got more than 30 national and provincial research projects, obtained more than 10 provincial-level scientific research achievements, and had more than 400 papers published in national and international professional journals.

We accumulated a wealth of teaching experiences after more than 20 years of professional teaching experiences. Currently, we are undertaking multi-level teaching tasks:

(1) Undergraduate courses in Preventive Medicine and Health Laboratory Technology, including “Virological Laboratory Technology", "Bacterial Laboratory Technology", "Immunological Laboratory Technology ", "Health Microbiology" and "Health and Quarantine";

(2) Master’s and Doctor’s courses in Virology and Immerging Viral Deaseses, and Master of Public Health related courses;

(3) Undergraduate and college related courses of continuing education (online course);

(4) General selected course "Hazards of STD and AIDS " and general education curriculum "Health and safety and healthy life".

In addition, we wrote and edited more than 10 national undergraduate textbooks or monographs as chief editor or editor.

Communication and cooperation

The Department has established long-term cooperative relationships with China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Academy of Military Medical Sciences, National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, Center for Disease Control and Prevention of Shandong Province and many Grade III A hospitals in Shandong Province, and established many research basements in several cities and areas in Shandong Province.

Now we have successively established cooperative relations with the relevant departments of internationally renowned universities and research institutions, such as University of Texas, University of Massachusetts Medical School, the National Key Laboratory of Microbiology of Canadian Health Department and Rice University.

Community service

As a member of Health Analysis and Testing Center of Shandong University (national health food inspection agency), we are responsible for the detection tasks involving the function and hygiene indicators of health care products.
