Department of Epidemiology

[About]

There are 9 faculty members in the Department of Epidemiology, including 5 professors, 3 lecturers and 1 laboratory technician. There are 5 supervisors for master degree students and 5 supervisors for doctoral students. Nine of the teachers have doctoral degrees. Five teachers are under 45 years old. In addition, there are 7 part-time master's supervisors, 6 part-time doctoral supervisors and 2 doctoral supervisors from other institutions. Nine well-known domestic and international scholars have been appointed part-time visiting professors in the Department.

The Department has five research centers and two laboratories, namely, STD/AIDS Prevention and Control Research Center of Shandong University, Suicide Prevention Research Center of Shandong University, Shandong University Climate Change and Health Center, Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-based Medicine Center of Shandong University, Children Cardiovascular Diseases Center of Shandong University, and Molecular Epidemiology and Serum Epidemiology Laboratory. Equipment and instruments in the department include: gel imaging system, centrifugal concentrator, multi-function enzyme labelling instrument, inverted phase contrast microscope, fluorescence phase contrast microscope, fluorescence quantitative PCR instrument, gradient PCR analyzer, genetic analyzer, protein extraction and purification system, automatic cross flow filtration system, ultrapure water system, frozen slicing machine, low-temperature centrifuge, two-dimensional electrophoresis, molecular hybridization furnace, and two-color infrared system, Laser imaging system and other experimental instruments.

[Teaching]

The Department of Epidemiology offers Epidemiology, Preventive Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology for students majored in clinical medicine, stomatology, nursing, adult education and other professional and multi-level undergraduate and doctoral students. The teaching task of Sickness. Doctoral students majoring in epidemiology and health statistics (epidemiology direction), master's degree in science and master's degree in public health are enrolled. For master/doctoral students, courses such as Epidemiological Research Methods and Applications, Advances in Epidemiological Research, Modern Epidemiology, Field Epidemiology, Design and Data Analysis of Epidemiological Research were offered. Epidemiology is now a top-quality course in Shandong University and Shandong Province.

Over the years,thedepartment has trained a large number of high-level scientific research and management personnel in public health and preventive medicine forthe country. So far, more than 300 master's students and50 doctoral students have been trained. At present, there are more than 80 graduate students and15 doctoral students.

[Scientific Research]

The Department of Epidemiology has four main research directions, which are characterized by interdisciplinary integration, macro-and micro-integration.

1. Epidemiology of Chronic Non-communicable Diseases: cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, tumors and other major chronic non-communicable diseases.

2. Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases:HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, hepatitis, tsutsugamushi disease and other infectious diseases.

3. Behavioral epidemiology: smoking, suicide and sexually transmitted diseases related behavior.

4. Climate Change and Health: Mainly based on China's climate change and public health issues, with the long-term goal of establishing and improving the theory and coping strategies of the impact of climate change on people's health under the background of global warming.

Over the past five years, the department has undertakenover 60scientific research projectsfunded bythe World Health Organization,US National Institutes of Health,National Key Technology R&D Program, National Science and Technology Major Project, the National Natural Science Fund, “Project 973”, National Health and Family Planning Commission, and provincial departments., etc.More than 600 papershas beenpublished in academic journalswith more than 150 paperspublished in international journals.
