Introduction

Department of Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Shandong University

Medical Statistics/Biostatistics helps researchers to study their objects from the outside to the inside, sift the true from the false, and reveal the objective laws. Whether scientific research like Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Preventive Medicine, or plan making and evaluation of disease prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and care could not be seperated from Medical Statistics/Biostatistics.

Biostatistics of School of Public Health is one of the oldest disciplines to award master’s degree of Shandong University, and was authorized to award doctor’s degree of Epidemiology and Health Statistics in 1998. Epidemiology and Health Statistics was identified as national key disciplines in 2001. It set up post-doctoral research station since 2003. The discipline has been among the national “211 Project” and “985 Project” since the beginning. With generations of relentless efforts, the department has become provincially recognized teaching team with high research ability, good teaching outcome, and well-organized work division. Currently, the department has 12 full time members and 6 part-time members. The full-time faculty is consisted of 2 professors, 3 associate professors, 5 lectures and 2 laboratory technicians. We have 2 doctoral supervisors and 4 master’s supervisors. Seventy percent of the faculty has overseas experience of more than one year. There are 8 young scholars in our team. Besides, the team is consisted around 30 talents which are made up of post-doctors and doctor/master candidates from interdisciplinary subject of Medicine, Biology, Mathematics and Computer Science. The research team is well-organized, with staff of public health and preventive medicine as well as mathematics, statistics and computer science. History

Early Stage

School of Public Health, Shandong University(previously Shandong Medical University) could be traced back to 1934. Professor Wang Fuyi, famous public health scholar in China, used to work in our university, teaching Health Statistics and Health Organization. He held two training programs for national statisticians in 1951 and 1952. Professor Yang Shuqin and Professor Wang Junle, statisticians of older generation, attained these programs and taught here(Shandong Medical University) after graduation, cotaught Health Statistics and Health Organization together with professor Shu Haifu. Despite the fact that the Health Department has gone through two dissolutions in 1955 and 1962, the Health Branch remains all the time, who take the responsibility of teaching courses such as Health Statistics and Health Organization to the clinical medicine major students. Due to the Cultural Revolution, our university ceased student admission from 1966 to 1970, then restored the two courses since 1971.

Developmental Stage

The university set up Health Department again in 1977, including the Health Statistics Division. There were four teachers and one technician undertook the teaching task of Medical Statistics in Hygenics to all clinical medicine major students. The five-year college program was restored in 1977, and the three-year master program started since 1978. The courses we had at that time includes Health Statistics Targeted to Preventive Medicine students, Medical Statistical Methods targeted to clinical medicine and stamotology major students, and Medical Statistics Methods for all master students of the university. The workforce of the team increased to seven teachers and two technicians in 1983. When China reformed and opened up, three young lecturer studied overseas, resulting in the lack of teachers.

Lifting Stage

When Shandong University, Shandong Medical University and Shandong Industrial University merged to form one unified institution known as the current Shandong University in 2000, the branch changed its name to Biostatistics Branch of School of Public Health, Shandong University. Following the mission of “Reserve talents for the world, and seek prosperity for the nation”, Shandong University actively promote the development process of constructing a research university, research school, and research discipline, and to achieve the goal of becoming one of the highest ranking universities. Under the call of the university, our branch have made the working guideline “develop researching and teaching simultaneously, and promote teaching through researching”

Besides, we have part-time staff from overseas, such as Cambridge, North Carolina, and Yale. Thus, we are equipped with a research and teaching team of international level with competitive educational background, good research structure, strong sense of innovation and great service awareness.

In terms of scientific research, we attach importance to the combination of statistical theory and practical application, and has formed four charaterized research directions, including “Theory Research and Application of Omics Data Statistical Analysis and Systems Epidemiology”, “Theory Research and Application of Health/Disease Risk Assessment and Life Course Epidemiology”, “Research Design and Statistical Methods of Translational Medicine and Real-world Clinical Studies”, and “Theory Research and Application of Spatial Epidemiology and Spatial Genetics”. In terms of teaching, our branch undertakes the following courses: 1. The Statistical Methods on Population Health of Preventive Medicine for the five-year, seven-year and eight-year non preventive medicine major students. 2. Medical Statistics for seven-year, eight-year non preventive medicine major students. 3. The Statistical Methods on Population Health of Preventive Medicine for six-year (given in English) and international students. 4. Talent Cultivation

Overview

Biostatistics is the application of statistical principles and methods in biomedical research, covering all statistical issues in the area of life science research, clinical medicine research and preventive medicine research. Its core content is the biomedical research design and statistical analysis. To cultivate talents good at practicing as well as creating has always been our basic strategy.

To adjust the graduate students’ curriculum timely according to the social needs and the team’s research basis is our basic path to cultivate practical talents, while to combine theoretical methods acquisition with on-site practical ability is our basic mode of improving students’ practical ability. The core of this path/mode follows basic rules of translational medicine and translational public health, and builds a two-way channel between the theory acquisition on campus and scientific platform off campus, which enables the students to study while practicing and practicing while study, so as to meet to social needs. Through promoting this path/mode, our graduates have always been in short supply, with a 100% employment rate; more than 90% of them begin their career in major cities. As the development of Biomedicine and the transformation of this industry, the job fields of our graduates have expanded from administrative institutions like colleges and CDCs to hospitals, research institutions, biopharmaceutical companies as well as colleges.

Our basic strategy to cultivate creative talents in biostatistics is to combine statistical methods study and new statistical methods study. To realize this, the background of enrolled graduate students is gradually optimizing. We generally assure that 50% of them graduated from majors of mathematics, statistics and computer science, 50% from preventive medicine and biological science, so as to form a team of around 30 talents which are made up of post-doctors and doctor/master candidates from interdisciplinary subject of Medicine, Biology, Mathematics and Computer Science. We adopt “Independence, Uniqueness, and Originality” method to cultivate creative talents. For undergraduate students, we mainly focus on developing their independence, requiring them to have their own viewpoints, but these could have been pointed out by supervisors or previous researchers. For master candidates, we mainly focus on developing their uniqueness, requiring them to have their own viewpoints, and at least one or two of these have never been carried out before. For doctor candidates, we focus on developing there originality, requiring them to have their own viewpoints which have never been carried out before. Currently, our average undergraduate student could publish one to two Chinese research articles, master students could publish one to two SCI articles, and doctor students could publish two to three SCI articles of high quality.

To pursue further study abroad have become the main direction of our graduates. One to two undergraduate students goes abroad, one to two master candidates go abroad for joint programs, and all doctor candidate should have joint program experience of at least one year. Besides, one to two master candidates and doctor candidates pursue further study after graduation.

International & Domestic Cooperation

Overview

We attach great importance on communication, and have carried out a system consisted of communications of multiple levels, including teacher’s visiting, students’ joint cultivation, attending international and domestic academic meetings, exchange programs and so on.

By sending teachers abroad for further study, visit or work, their research ability is well improved. Meanwhile, the advanced teaching and research experience is introduced, teachers’ horizon is broadened, and thus the internationalization of the team in terms of teaching and research is improved.

The talent cultivation mode of “One student has two supervisors and three experiences” is implemented in order to improve students’ international ability as well as practical skills. To explain, “one student” means that we attach equal importance on students’ individuality and cultivation. “Two supervisors” means each student has a supervisor at school, together with a supervisor from the cooperation organizations. This could be fellows from other disciplines of the same university, cooperative companies or governmental institutions, or other universities domestic or abroad. “Three experiences” is consisted of foreign experience, second-campus experience, and social practice experience. This means that we support and encourage our students to pursue further study abroad, help students to participate in the joint cultivation programs, establish new and various forms corporation with other universities, and reinforce the corporation with local government and other institutions in order to expand students’ social practice channel.

We improve the teaching and researching practical skills and internationalization through domestic and international exchanging and attending academic meetings, which is made up of inviting other scholars for visiting, accepting short-term internship of international students, accepting teachers and students from brother universities for study and visit, sending teachers and students to attend foreign academic meetings, sending research groups to hospitals, CDCs and other institutions for exchange.

Academic Forums

Overview

To organize academic forums is an effective way of improving team’s research and teaching ability. Our team combines regular forums with irregular ones to promote academic forums. Meanwhile, we provide targeted research articles to teachers and students by our information sharing database.

The regular academic seminar is organized by the team and held once a week. Usually, the seminar is targeted to one specific issue. The final solution to this issue will be given after the lectures given by teachers, students or visiting scholars and the participation of the whole team.

Irregular project seminar is held by the project leader. Based on the research questions the team needs to solve, the team leader organizes the senior irregularly. Usually it is held once to twice a week. We try to solve problems by putting everyone’s heads together, aiming to cultivate our team spirit and build consensus of the team.

Our information sharing database is an open platform. While reviewing the literature, professors and students upload the important articles, meeting information and personal viewpoints to the database for other’s reference. This way makes the team’s literature accumulation and sharing easier.
