Master’s programs at School of Public Health, SDU

The School of Public Health at Shandong University offers Master’s and doctorate degrees in all the seven departments: Department of Epidemiology, Department of Biostatistics, Department of Hygiene Toxicology and Nutrition, Department of Occupational and Environmental Health, Department of Social Medicine, Child Health and Maternal Care, Department of Physical and Chemical Inspection, and Department of Microbiological Inspection.

There are two tracks in Master’s program: the scientific track and the professional track. Both tracks are three-year programs.

  1. The scientific track:

The scientific track covers a broad research field , such as Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Occupational and Environmental Health, Children's Hygiene and Maternal and Child Care, Hygiene Toxicology, Health Laboratory Science, Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Social Medicine and Health Management.

Year One courses provide the fundamental knowledge of public health science, Year Two is for project research and paper writing. The enrolled students may choose one of the school’s research groups, and one faculty supervisor. Year Three is for ending project and thesis writing. The enrolled students write thesis under the guidance of supervisor and conclude their project.

The program core courses provide an essential knowledge of public health science, as well as recent progress in the field. The optional courses are based on the research direction. Upon the completion of the program, students will obtain a Master’s Degree of Medicine, recognized by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.

The total credits for the program are no less than 30 (16 hours per credit), in which no less than 20 credits are for compulsory (core) courses.

In the third year, students should finish their master’s thesis, which is no less than 20,000 words in total, and defend it in the sixth term (in mid-May). The students should work closely with their advisor to define a focused topic and conduct the research. Students should also be bold and actively engaged in research activities, and strive to publish papers in academic journals.

  1. The professional track

The professional track (Master of Public Health, MPH) is a professional degree that will prepare students to solve public health problems by applying professional disciplinary approaches and methods in professional environments such as local, provincial or national public health agencies and health care organizations.  The MPH is offered by all departments of the School of Public Health.

Year One courses provide the fundamental knowledge of public health science. Year Two is for field work in 14 intern bases, mostly provincial and city centers for disease control and prevention. Faculty supervisor will work together with one supervisor at intern bases to guide the field work for students. Year Three is for ending project and thesis writing. The enrolled students write thesis under the guidance of both supervisors and conclude their project.

The program core courses provide an essential knowledge of public health science, as well as recent progress in the field. The optional courses are based on the research direction. Upon the completion of the program, students will obtain a Master’s Degree of Medicine, recognized by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.

The total credits for the program are no less than 35, in which no less than 28 credits are for compulsory (core) courses.

In the third year, students should finish their master’s thesis, which is no less than 20,000 words in total, and defend it in the sixth term (in mid-May). The students should work closely with their advisors to define a focused topic and conduct the research.
